Maximino Pérez recognised for his contribution to bullfighting in Cuenca

Bullfighting entrepreneur Maximino Pérez receives the ‘Patrimonio Tauromaquia Ciudad de Cuenca’ Award ahead of the centenary of the city’s bullring.

Bullfighting entrepreneur Maximino Pérez has received the ‘Patrimonio Tauromaquia Ciudad de Cuenca’ Award, presented by the Círculo Taurino de Cuenca as part of the second edition of these awards.

The honour recognises his career at the helm of the Cuenca Bullring and his contribution to the development of bullfighting in the city. The award comes at a particularly significant time, with the historic venue approaching its 100th anniversary.

The celebrations marking 100 years of the bullring will include a special programme featuring tributes to two figures closely linked to bullfighting in Cuenca: Curro Fuentes and Luis Algara ‘El Estudiante’.

Maximino Pérez is also set to receive an institutional honour, with Cuenca City Council expected to approve his appointment as an Adoptive Son of the city.

Recognition for the Alicia Chico breeding operation

The ceremony also included a Special Mention for Tomás and Eleu González, owners of the Alicia Chico fighting-bull breeding operation, in recognition of their work and contribution to the world of bull breeding.

The event was presented by journalist Leo Cortijo, director of La Tribuna de Cuenca, and brought together representatives from Cuenca’s bullfighting, social and institutional communities.

A further announcement for the coming season was also made during the ceremony: Cuenca will host five days of vaquillas, strengthening the role of popular bullfighting events within the city’s programme.

Cuenca looks ahead to its centenary

The recognition of Maximino Pérez comes at an important moment for bullfighting in Cuenca. With a century of history approaching, the bullring is preparing for a season that will celebrate its heritage while also looking towards the future.

The centenary will provide an opportunity to honour those who have played a part in the history of the venue and to highlight the continuing role of bullfighting culture in Cuenca.
